The AFAC Knowledge Web was an initiative born out of the Bushfire CRC's Fire Knowledge Network project. That project aimed to bring together the broad spectrum of research, both within the CRC and from researchers in other organisations, together with local knowledge, and lessons from history.
A joint partnership between the Bushfire CRC and AFAC, this concept was expanded to draw in the operational knowledge of fire, land management and emergency service organisations in Australia and New Zealand, creating an online source of knowledge and sharing for the industry.
This is the beta version of the Knowledge Web, beta being web terminology for “a development status given to a program or application that contains most of the major features, but is not yet complete". Beta versions are often released to users so they can report any bugs they encounter or any changes they'd like to see before the final version is complete. This feedback is then used to guide the next round of development. So the site you are using contains most of the features envisaged in its initial design.
Ongoing Development
The Knowledge Web is a site that will always be under development. Currently it contains only a fraction of the information potentially available. For the Knowledge Web to realise its potential as the 'go to' destination for industry information, it relies on AFAC members willingness to participate and share.
If you come to the site and can't find what you are looking for ask yourself two questions.
- Do I know where else I can find this information?
- If I know where else it is, can I post a copy onto the Knowledge Web?
Feedback
The feedback received from users will drive further refinements. The project team encourages you to provide feedback on your experiences, good or bad, to aid in the growth and development of the Knowledge Web.
The Knowledge Web belongs to the fire and emergency service industry and its development will be guided by its users and administered by AFAC. Fire, emergency service and land management agencies are encouraged to put forward ideas and suggestions for further consideration.
Please contact us if you can't find what you are looking for, or want to contribute to the Knowledge Web but are unsure how to go about it.
