A number of severe aftershocks have continued to devastate the city and its infrastructure from that time until the present. Lee Johnson became an Assistant Commissioner in QFRS in 1997 and was appointed Commissioner, QFRS, in January 2002.He began his fire service career in 1975 as a firefighter with the Townsville Fire Brigade Board. He has held firefighting, officer and management positions on the Gold Coast, Rockhampton and in Brisbane. He is currently the President of the Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council (AFAC). Additionally, he represents Queensland as a Director on the Board of the National Aerial Firefighting Centre (NAFC).
