Title:
OASES Project: Operational appliance storage and equipment system
Authors:
Equipment and Resource Management, Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board, Melbourne, VIC, Australia

Overview

The MFB is actively working to reduce the health and safety risks associated with firefighting. Working together with WorkSafe Victoria, it has initiated the Operational Appliance Storage and Equipment System (OASES) to minimise firefighters exposure to a range of risks associated with its fleet of firefighting vehicles.

The goals of the OASES project are to:

  • Reduce firefighter health and safety risk and organisational liability;

  • Improve equipment and storage arrangements on identified appliances;

  • Reduce manual handling risks associated with removing and storing operational equipment from firefighting appliances;

  • Reduce damage to operational equipment through improved storage;

  • Standardise appliance features, equipment and equipment storage across the operational fleet and

  • Increasing access to structural firefighting and wildfire Personal Protective Clothing and Equipment.

    Extensive consultation, a dedicated project team, prototype testing and ongoing review have seen the retrofit of the MFB's existing fleet and the design applied to all new vehicles. The presentation will discuss this project and its impact on reducing risks to firefighters in terms of falls from heights, manual handling, transfer of contaminants from fire scene and exposure to hazardous materials.
