AFAC Learning & Development Strategy 2011–2015

Latest Status Report

The Need

Over recent years, the AFAC Learning and Development Group has completed a number of national projects to support and consolidate vocational education and training (VET) within the industry. Many of these AFAC projects are nearing completion and it is now timely to consolidate and build on this work by exploring emerging industry needs and opportunities in the field, and to consolidate these into an Australian/New Zealand strategy for learning and development.
In developing an industry learning and development strategy, AFAC will explore, among other things, strategic relationships and partnerships between AFAC members and public and private training providers, embed the research outputs of the Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre (BCRC) through the research adoption strategy, and explore blended learning models and articulation arrangements between VET and higher education.

Benefits and Strategic Alignment

This project is aligned to Goal 4 in the AFAC Strategic Plan for 2010–2012 for working with member agencies to develop ‘A fire and emergency services sector with capability and capacity’. This report will confirm industry learning and development strategic directions and priorities; identify internal and external partnership opportunities within VET and higher education institutions in targeted areas, explore flexible models for delivery of specialist capabilities and identify opportunities for learning and development initiatives that can be best achieved through a national and collective approach.

Proposal

To be delivered:

  1. An AFAC report detailing the industry learning and development strategic directions and priorities and recommendations.
  2. A supporting strategy for the implementation of agreed recommendations and a supplementary work program.
