Knowledge Web Readability Project
The Need
The AFAC Knowledge Web provided a major leap forward in the information services offered by AFAC to its members. It is a work in progress and as such requires ongoing development in order to reach its potential.Research undertaken in terms of user surveys, analytical reviews, Group manager interviews and competitor analysis has been used to shape the sites development over the next 12 months. Greater sophistication, increased efficiency in functionality and information architecture is needed on the Knowledge Web to support the AFAC Knowledge Management Approach.
For AFAC to achieve its Strategic Goals, its technology environment needs to match its future business need. It has been identified that the Knowledge Web has two clear development phases to reach this objective.
Phase 1, the “Readability Project”
This involves focusing on content redevelopment and information architecture, thereby improving the readability of the content and how content is grouped together. A key focus area will be to provide more analysis and interpretation of information to improve our users’ experience, with minimal costs involved.
Phase 2, usability.
This involves design changes to the GUI (Graphical User Interface) in conjunction with improvements of the existing functionality and user management system. Phase 2 requirements rely on other pieces of work being completed and will follow on from Phase 1.
In order to meet the needs of our users, several discreet projects are currently underway that will be done as part of Phase 1.
Benefits and Strategic Alignment
The Knowledge Web is the primary enabler of the AFAC Knowledge Management Strategy and contributes to the achievement of Goal 4 of the AFAC Strategic Plan.
The Knowledge Web is being developed as the go-to place for the accumulated knowledge of the industry. Demand for access to information is growing considerably from within AFAC member agencies. The availability of a web based information service tool is crucial to the AFAC future strategy and the value that it provides to its membership.
This readability project will help enhance the customer experience by:
- Improving the readability of the content on the website by providing greater analysis and interpretation of information
- Providing a more user-focused site architecture
- Displaying a consistent look and feel between each page within the website
Proposal
The readability project will focus on improving the content within public and member's area sections of the Knowledge Web. This involves analysing the content and identifying
- What is current
- What needs to be rewritten
- What can be removed from the site.
In addition to this, the information architecture will be tested with a focus group to find a better grouping of the content on the Knowledge Web.
Consultation
A project team has been set up to coordinate the readability project. The team is currently working together to identify key steps and resources.
