Analysis of the Victorian Bushfire Royal Commission findings and recommendations
The Need
The Royal Commission will hand down its final report in mid 2010. There have already been two interim reports on community warnings and building standards that AFAC has responded to. It is envisaged the final report will be much larger and may revisit some of the interim findings. As the defining bushfire event of the last 25 years, the findings will be taken seriously by all state and territory governments. Understanding and readiness for change will be expected of relevant AFAC members. Matters arising from the Commission are not confined to agencies concerned with bushfire suppression but have implications across the entire AFAC membership. Particularly for matters concerning incident management and community warnings.
Benefits and Strategic Alignment
Consistent with AFAC Goal 1 Leadership and Advocacy, AFAC has represented the industry’s views on a range of matters in the Royal Commission via its status as a party to the inquiry. AFAC will once again put forth the industry’s views on the findings and recommendations in the final report. As the industry’s peak association it is incumbent on AFAC to ensure all industry stakeholders are aware of the impact the Commission’s final report will have on the industry. AFAC will facilitate any collective work that needs to occur to implement Commission Recommendations at the national level.
