2010 Pre Conference Workshops Announced

Building on the success of the 2009 Bushfire CRC Pre-Conference Workshops, a series of pre-conference Professional Development Events has been finalised and will be held on the day prior to the Annual AFAC/BCRC Conference.

Warnings – Understanding the new national arrangements

This interactive Clinic will provide practical guidance to those people who are involved in the process of information flow to communities and want to understand more about the national system and the revised Fire Danger Ratings and warnings. It will include discussion about the results of evaluation and review processes that the fire agencies and the Attorney-General’s department are conducting, including any recommended improvements to the national arrangements.

Introduction to the fire and emergency management industry

This half day forum is for those new to the fire and emergency management sector, to help to gain a holistic understanding and a national perspective on how the industry operates. Presenters from AFAC, the Bushfire CRC, land management and fire agencies will give an overview and highlight key challenges facing the industry.

Writing for Scientific Publication

Have you ever tried (and failed) to get an article published in a peer-reviewed journal? Do you write reports for an internal audience but have never thought to try to get them published? This two-part Clinic will assist researchers and agency-based personnel who need support and guidance in writing papers suitable for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Part one: Theory session - structure, referencing, length and writing style, with lots of practical tips.
Part two: Practical session - participants will produce a paper, with guidance from an expert, and receive feedback. Participants will need to bring notes and reports they can use for the practical session.

Volunteering in Emergency Services – where to from here?

Volunteers are integral to successful emergency response. Community expectations continue to increase, compounded by climate change which is resulting in more extreme weather events. In addition, closer scrutiny of actions, such as the Victorian Bushfire Royal Commission, can have a significant impact on volunteers.

This Forum will explore the initiatives underway to attract, support and retain emergency management volunteers, including an overview of the most recent findings from the Bushfire CRC volunteerism program. There will also be presentations on some innovative agency practices.

The latest developments in mapping and spatial support for Australia’s emergency service organisations

Spatial Information technologies comprise a range of disciplines which come together to provide valuable input across many hazard types.  Spatial Sciences is longer just about making maps. Spatial Sciences are at the heart of dispatching, resource allocation, warnings, pre incident planning, fire modelling, remote sensing, plume modelling and field mapping. These are reliant on the underlying principles of consistency, standards and skilled workers across jurisdictions. Hosted by the Emergency Management Spatial Information Network Australia (EMSINA)

Regional Implications of Climate Change for Emergency Management

This forum, hosted by The National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility Emergency Management Network, will examine the regional implications for emergency management of climate change, as well as other topics under discussion with partners.
