NAFC Roll Out National Tracking and Event Logging Services for Aircraft
In late 2009, NAFC and its members (Australian States and Territories) adopted a national standard approach to the provision of tracking and event logging services for aircraft involved in firefighting and related operations.
The adoption of a national approach follows extensive investigation and consultation with agencies and operators throughout Australia.
This model is also designed to integrate with and to complement systems that are already in place in some States and Territories. It provides flexibility to participate at a number of different levels, according to the particular needs of individual agencies. It is planned that this will extend to messaging systems in the future.
NAFC and CFS trial aerial intelligence gathering systems
In the interests of developing improved aerial firefighting capabilities, NAFC and the Country Fire Service (CFS) recently undertook a trial of aerial intelligence gathering systems. The trial, which is part of an ongoing national trial, was undertaken over several prescribed burn operations in South Australia both during the day and at night. It entailed the gathering and transmitting of real-time fire information using both high definition visual and infrared sensors, back to various ground stations. The information was used to gain both a quick visual overview of the fire scene as well as providing valuable data for processing in CFS’s Geographic Information Systems.
