One of the local National Parks and Wildlife Service’ (NPWS) most experienced and senior fire-fighters Bryce Laut was killed during efforts to contain a wildfire in Kumbatine National Park west of Kempsey late on Sunday afternoon (26/10).
Bryce was one of four NPWS officers working to put out the fire when a burnt-out tree fell directly onto him. His colleagues tried all they could to revive him.
A respected and well-liked colleague and friend to many, Mr Laut worked for the NPWS for ten years as a Senior Ranger, Fire Management in Mid North Coast Region.
Prior to that he had worked for the NSW Rural Fire Service.
Police from Mid North Coast Local Area Command are conducting inquiries into the circumstances surrounding Mr Laut’s death.
A report will be prepared for the NSW Coroner’s office. The matter has also been referred to WorkCover.
NPWS staff spent time today with Bryce’s family who said he was very proud to work for the NPWS and this was a job he loved.
Mr Laut’s family have requested privacy during their time of grief.
Details of Bryce's funeral are yet to be finalised, however it is expected to be in the Port Macquarie area later this week.
