Overview
A Fire Danger Climatology for New Zealand was established from the analysis of 127 weather station locations producing long-term averages and extreme values summarised by month, fire season and year. In addition fire danger class frequencies for Forest and Scrubland vegetation types, where produced for month, fire season and year.
This information was used to identify the individual weather stations and geographic regions with the most severe fire climates. Stations in Marlborough and Canterbury demonstrated the highest values of the three fire climate severity measures contrasted.
The data is being used by New Zealand fire managers to make more informed fire management decisions on prevention, preparedness, and prescribed burning activities.
