Overview
The report Bushfire Weather in Southeast Australia: Recent Trends and Projected Climate Change Impacts, discusses climate change projections that indicate southeastern Australia is likely to become hotter and drier in future.
The study conducted in 2005 examined the potential impacts of climate change on fire-weather at 17 sites in southeast Australia. It found that the number of very high (FFDI exceeds 75) and extreme (FFDI exceeds 100) fire danger days could increase by:
- 4-25% by 2020
- 15-70% by 2050
Two new fire danger categories are considered: ‘very extreme’ and ‘catastrophic’.
