Overview
The Examination of Prescribed Burning Practices report was prepared by the Emergency Service commissioner after a 20-hectare prescribed burn at Wilsons Promontory escaped and subsequently burnt more than 6000 hectares of the national park in April 2005.
The report focuses on how the management of fuel reduction burns might be improved to minimise the risk of such escapes in the future. The report made a number of recommendations covering:
- burn management
- organisational capacity
- risk management
- community engagement
DSE, who had operational responsibility for the Wilsons Promontory burn accepted the recommendations.
