Overview

The International Bushfire Research Conference 2008 - incorporating The 15th annual AFAC Conference, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia

Landscape-scale fuel accumulation fostered by the explosive combination of decreased levels of forest management and a fire exclusion policy is expected to result in larger and more damaging wildfires in Europe. FIRE PARADOX is a cooperative European integrated project (2006-2010) that seeks to contribute to mitigate fire impacts by creating the scientific and technical foundation for practices and policies consistent with the concept of integrated wildland fire management, i.e. allowing an adequate balance between the management of natural resources and the management of unwanted fires.

For the sake of integration, coherence and completeness, FIRE PARADOX approaches fire from four complementary sides, respectively ignition, prescribed burning, fire propagation, and suppression fire. The work programme comprises 13 interrelated modules evenly distributed between the domains of research, development and outreach, and is oriented towards innovation, targeting the implementation of proven sound solutions and questioning ineffective policies and practices.
