Overview
In the late 1990s, the Department of Sustainability and Environment (known then as the Department of Natural Resources and Environment) and the Bureau of Meteorology jointly developed a sophisticated ‘smoke management service’ which became national through the involvement of the Australasian Fire Authorities Council.
The 'Modelling transport, dispersion and secondary pollutant formation of emissions from burning vegetation using air quality dispersion models' report summarises the original work and details the initial outcomes achieved.
Through the Bushfire CRC this work has been further refined and more research is being conducted
