Overview
Four tropical cyclones, deep monsoonal troughs, severe thunderstorms, and east coast lows certainly made for a busy year in the north! Was 2008/09 in Queensland simply an aberration or is this a signal of what our future may hold? The past year has seen relief arrangements activated for more than 70% of the State. From communities isolated for months in the gulf country, to extraordinary damage to property in urban Brisbane no corner, or demographic, of the State emerged unscathed.
This year has not only seen natural disasters: but also major events around the environmental damage from the “Pacific Adventurer” oil spill; and the early response to contain the H1N1 Pandemic.
Coupled with this sharp increase in activity are the ever increasing expectations by communities and industries for authorities to rapidly intervene and meet all their recovery needs.
With such an efficient and uninterrupted supply chain of events and rising consumer demand for services Disaster Management appears to be a growth industry! Are we ready? Do we have a business plan? This presentation examines the impact of recent events, discusses emerging issues from and operational and policy perspective and canvasses some of the challenges facing disaster managers
