Australian communities rely on the 200,000+ volunteers in the fire and emergency services sector for their protection. The more that is understood about why individuals volunteer, and perhaps more importantly, why they don’t, the more we may be able to ensure the long term sustainability of fire and emeregency services.
In some rural communities, economic and demographic factors are resulting in a decline and ageing of populations, which impacts significantly on the volunteer workforce. Strategic planning and policy development concerning recruitment and retention of volunteers is critical.
Research in this area of the site examines volunteering, in particular strategies to enhance the volunteer experience and their recruitment and retention.
