Within the workplace personnel are required to perform various roles in the case of an emergency. This includes a range of roles from:
- Fire Warden
- Chief Warden
- Emergency Planning Committee Member
- First Attack Firefighting
- Emergency Team Member.
The qualifications needed by personnel to perform these and other roles are covered by the Workplace Emergency Response units contained within the Community Safety Qualifications of the Public Safety Training Package.
These roles are outlined in AS 3745 - Emergency control organisation and procedures for buildings. It covers procedures for the safety of people in buildings during emergency situations until the appropriate emergency service arrives,
The Workplace Emergency Response (WER) Training System consists of three streams covering 11 courses designed for workplace personnel.

AFAC, through its representation on the Industry Advisory Committee of Government Skills Australia, has been instrumental in developing the Fire Qualifications of the Public Safety Training Package, including Workplace Emergency Response Units.
AFAC has developed a suite of products to support the delivery of each of the WER competencies in the public and private sector. These products include:
- Comprehensive learner resources for participants with summaries, self assessment questions and activities
- Delivery and assessment tools comprising session plans, assessment tools and checklists and course evaluation pro-formas
